Longtime boys basketball rivals Duluth Central and Duluth East will meet Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Duluth Central.
The Trojans and Greyhounds are scheduled to play again February 23 at Duluth East, in what could be the final regular season game ever between the teams.
Tuesday’s game will feature an interesting individual matchup between Trojans scoring leader Darcell Williams (left) and Duluth East guard Dyami Starks, a Division I recruit.
Starks, who will attend Columbia University on a basketball scholarship in the fall, had 38 points in Duluth East’s 88-81 loss at Grand Rapids Tuesday.
Williams had a game-high 21 points in Duluth Central’s 65-60 home win over non-conference Chisago Lakes Area on Saturday.
“Intracity rivalries are always exciting,” Duluth East coach Chuck Tolo said.
Trojans-Greyhounds Hoops Notes
. Duluth Central coach David LeGarde said he was pleased with the Trojans’ team defense and intensity level against Chisago Lakes.
“Chisago Lakes is a strong rebounding team with a lot of size,” he said. “We battled hard throughout and withstood a second half run to take the victory. We did a nice job of closing out the game.”
. Duluth East will play in the Granite City Classic in St. Cloud on Dec. 28-30. The Greyhounds open against host St. Cloud Apollo at 8:15 p.m. Monday.
. The Greyhounds have played some wild games against outstanding opponents lately, Tolo said.
“We defeated Forest Lake, one of the top teams in our Section at their place, 68-64, and lost at No. 6 Grand Rapids last Tuesday in double overtime (88-81),” said Tolo. “They (Grand Rapids) hit a 24-foot 3-pointer with about two seconds to go in the game to tie it. Dyami Starks hit a 3-pointer and was fouled with about eight seconds left in the first overtime. He hit the free throw to send it to the second overtime. Grand Rapids hit several free throws in the second overtime to win the game.”
