Duluth Denfeld will face No. 3-ranked Hermantown in the Section 5A high school boy’s hockey championship game at 7 p.m. today at Cloquet Area Recreation Center. Standing-room only tickets go on sale at 5 p.m. at the arena, and a sell-out crowd is expected. KQDS-AM 1490 and WKLK-FM 96.5 will broadcast the game. No TV.
The Hawks defeated the Hunters 5-4 in overtime on Feb. 9, in their only meeting during the regular season.
Denfeld is led by senior forwards Keith Tomassoni, Jason Johnson and Logan Talarico, and senior defenseman Andrew Doig. Freshman forward Levi Talarico (team-high 42 points) and freshman goaltender Zach Thompson (2.29 goals-against and .921 saves percentage) have stepped up big-time for the Hunters.
Adam Krause (63 points), a Mr. Hockey finalist, is Hermantown’s top player.
To accomodate a larger crowd, Denfeld attempted to get the game moved to the DECC. But Hermantown officials declined.
In boy’s basketball regular season games tonight, Duluth East plays host to Duluth Denfeld and Duluth Central hosts Bemidji, both 7:30 p.m. starts.
In Section 7AAAA girl’s basketball play Thursday, Duluth East lost to host Blaine 47-45.
